“This project allowed me to further explore black trans communities and feel more confident stepping out into the world understanding that I am not fighting alone for equality, understanding and acceptance.”
BreakOUT! seeks to end the criminalization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth to build a safer and more just New Orleans. BreakOUT! builds on the rich cultural tradition of resistance in the South to build the power of LGBTQ and people directly impacted by the criminal justice system through youth organizing, healing justice, and leadership development programs. BreakOUT!, along with partners in New Orleans and across the country, will take to the streets this year to celebrate the lives of 22 trans women murdered and countless other trans and gender non-conforming youth who we lost to deportation, suicide, interpersonal, and state violence, and most of whom were women of color. Building on the tradition of Trans Day of Remembrance, we take this time to celebrate the resilience and resistance shown by queer and trans youth of color every day.
